PDQ Display Reduces Material Used

Because Wal-Mart insists that all PDQ displays must be a full 30 inches wide, they can normally be shipped only 35 to a pallet. Henschel-Steinau of Englewood, NJ, however, has created a new type of PDQ display, called the ECOPDQ, which can not only be shipped 70 to a pallet, but also reduces the amount of corrugated required for each display, reducing the quantity that must be discarded or recycled."The secret is a corrugated sleeve that slides out after the display is delivered," says Aaron Henschel, president. "With the sleeve in, the display is only 16 inches wide, so it can be shipped twice as many to a pallet. When the sleeve is pulled out, the display expands to 30 inches in width to meet Wal-Mart's requirements."Because the ECOPDQ is only 16 inches wide and the product packages inside are immediately visible when the sleeve is pulled out, it requires significantly less corrugated than a traditional PDQ. "Wal-Mart's stated goal is to reduce the amount of waste generated by its stores by 25%," says Henschel. "In fact, the ECOPDQ reduces the amount of waste, which must be discarded or recycled, by a full 47%."Henschel-Steinau also figures in other factors that contribute to savings. Taking into account the number of ECOPDQs that go into stores and the average square feet of corrugated required for the display unit, Henschel says it "yields a total annual savings of over 10 million square feet of corrugated." Because it can be shipped 70 to a pallet, the ECOPDQ also reduces the number of pallets and truck trips required. According to figures calculated in consensus with the Department of Energy, these material and cost reductions are equivalent to saving 500 tons of recycled paper, 3,500,000 gallons of water, 8500 trees and 2 million Kilowatts of electricity as well as eliminating 30 thousand pounds of air pollution.The ECOPDQ has the additional advantage of requiring fewer corrugated parts to fill product voids and protect the product during shipment. Graphics are printed on the sleeve instead of the void panels, so the product can be packed at a greater density. The ECOPDQ can also be assembled more quickly on the floor.
